Healthy Homemade Tacos

This recipe is fairly simple and the ingredients are interchangeable to your specific tastes.  You can make really tasty tacos at home without using the pre-made seasoning packets from the store which has a lot of salt and MSG.  You can season the meat with spices you probably already have in your kitchen.  I used ground turkey for this particular recipe but that can be substituted with ground beef, ground chicken, fish, shrimp or even tempeh or soy protein to make it vegetarian.  The key is to flavor the main protein with pure spices found in your pantry.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2-2 lbs of ground turkey (substitute with any other protein)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 small jalapeño pepper (substitute with chili powder)
  • 2-3 garlic cloves
  • cumin
  • salt and pepper for taste
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 jar salsa
  • 1 bag shredded cheese
  • 1 package whole wheat tortillas

In a skillet, heat olive oil and add chopped onion, jalapeño, garlic and salt and pepper.

Cook on high heat until onions become translucent; about 5-10 minutes.

Add ground turkey (or whatever protein you choose) to the skillet. Sprinkle in cumin powder and chili powder (only use chili powder if you omitted the jalapeño).

Break apart ground turkey and mix with cooked onions. Occasionally stir until meat is throughly cooked. Turn off heat.

Once meat is cooked, its time to assemble your taco.  I like to warm the tortillas in the microwave for 30 seconds. There are many different toppings you can use like olives, lettuce, etc.  The point of this meal is to eat healthy and have fun!
